Dr. Robinson began teaching college level dance at the age 15 at the University of Colorado and had started her own dance school by the time she was 18 years. She founded Cleo Parker Robinson Dance (CPRD) in 1970, and now, more than 30 years later, the organization stands as an internationally recognized cultural arts institution. Guided by the pioneering vision of Dr. Robinson, CPRD comprises a year-round dance School, an international summer dance institute, a 300 –seat Theatre and the world renowned Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble. Cleo’s most influential mentors are Rita Berger, a former dancer with George Balanchine and soloist with the Metropolitan Opera, and the legendary choreographer and humanitarian Katherine Dunham.
Dr. Robinson is a Master Teacher, Choreographer, Director and Motivational Speaker. She has received choreography fellowships from The Lila Wallace Foundation, Pew Charitable Trust Fund, and the National Dance Repertory Program. Commissions and collaborations include works with Dr. Maya Angelou, Katherine Dunham, Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Jay Hoggard. Carman Moore, Halim El-Dabh, Donald McKayle, Talley Beatty, Marin Alsop, and Gordon Parks. In 1999, Ms. Robinson made her debut as an opera director in the Opera Colorado sold-out production of Porgy and Bess. Dr. Robinson has served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts and USIS Inter-Arts. Appointed by Former President Clinton, Dr. Robinson continues to fulfill her role on the National Council for the Arts since 1999. She has been a guest professor at the University of Bahia Brazil, Technikon University in Pretoria South Africa, Adjunct Professor at the University of Denver, and the Chancellor’s Distinguished Professor at UC Irvine.
